Because I work from home, I have the luxury of spending my downtime doing pretty much anything. Sometimes I like to throw on my hoodie with a giant stencil of Woody Allen’s face on the front and do headstands, while watching my favorite scenes from What’s Up Tiger Lily. Other times, I go to my local book store’s magazine section and do one of these numbers, only instead of looking for porn, I’m looking for healthy living magazines that feature Alanis Morissette on the cover. And yes, sometimes I like to dress up as Kyp Malone and take photo booth pictures of myself.
Most of the time, though, I scour the internet looking for guitar tabs to my favorite pop songs. I then learn the chords and sing along to my nearly inaudible strumming. It’s wildly satisfying.
That being said, I want nothing less than to actually have people hear me playing guitar and singing along. This is why I’m always pleased when I see someone, not very different from myself (being that deep down inside I’m a woman with the grace of Emma Thompson and the voice of Olivia Newton John), do a cover so good you want to share it on Facebook. Unless of course, you have exceeded your sharing quota, which according to The Unpublished Unabridged Zuckerberg Guide to Using Facebook, is 1-2 shares a day, 3-5 shares a week.
Anyhow, I was cheek to cheek with smiles when I watched this talented young woman, Karys Rhea, cover Mates of State’s My Only Offer.
